If you’re looking for a great place to find poetry, I recommend going to the library of congress’s website and reading these poems. Billy Collins is also former Poet Laureate of the United States Of America, and while as Poet Laureate he devoted his time working on a program devoted to making poetry more accessible to younger generations ( Poetry 180) by making a mix of modern and old poems for students to read each day of school.

Collins is often referred to as “the most popular poet” and for good reason–his poetry is highly accessible yet full of wonderful yet dark humor, and fantastic unique observations bringing light to the mundane. I’ll be working on this list as time goes by but for now come enjoy some poetry.īilly Collins is the gateway poet of gateway poets. I’m listing poets here who have some way influenced me in some way and that are “accessible” to starting reader. But if you haven’t been introduced to some more accessible more modern poetry, then this list is for you. Perhaps Dante’s Inferno felt like hell or maybe Paradise Lost left you without paradise and mostly lost–I don’t know your story. Perhaps the cryptic puzzles that are the Shakespeare Sonnets or the clunky old English epics you had to read in school weren’t for you. You need to find somebody that speaks to you. However, I think poetry is like a drug, you can’t just slip to the hard stuff right away. People tell me “I don’t understand poetry.” I want to say, well sometimes that’s the point–to think. And the moments when most people are introduced to poetry, it’s usually being jammed down their throats throughout grade school which traumatizes them for life. We grow up in a time period where everything is exciting–you drive to work and you’re slapped in the face with 50 advertisements over the radio and with television and everything else, poetry sort of gets drowned out. At that point I usually go on a huge rant asking how anybody can hate poetry, but I know the answer: times are changing. Too often do I have people come up to me and say, “Jesse, I hate poetry.” At that point I throw a shoe at them and tell them to get out of my life–no, I don’t do that.
